Principles of Learning
We're Doing  it at Ames!
We're Doing it at Ames!
Saint Paul's Project for Academic Excellence is rooted in the districts commitment to standards-based education and professional development opportunities for all Saint Paul administrative and instructional staff. It is designed to meet two overriding goals:
* To transform the way the core skills of reading, writing, mathematics, and science are taught in Saint Paul Public Schools.
* To effectively and efficiently provide in-depth on-going training to teachers
and administrators.
The Project for Academic Excellence is based in large part on the work of Lauren Resnick, at the University of Pittsburghs Institute for Learning, and Marc Tucker, at the National Center on Education and the Economy.
Underlying the instructional practices modeled throughout Saint Pauls Project for Academic Excellence are the Principles of Learning developed by the Institute for Learning.  These principles guide administrative leadership, curriculum, instruction and assessment in an authentic standards-based model.
The following three principles we are focusing on at Ames:
Clear Expectations
* Standards available and discussed
* Families and community informed
Academic Rigor in a thinking Curriculum
* Curriculum and instruction organized around major concepts
* Students expected to raise questions, to solve problems, to reason
Accountable Talk
* Students actively participate in classroom talk
* Construct explanations and test understanding of concepts
