Welcome to 5th Grade in Room 3102. My name is Mrs. Sue Vang and this is my fourth year of teaching in which 2 1/2 years have been at Groveland. I enjoy teaching children because they crave learning and come with curious minds. I
believe that learning through inquiry empowers students with the skills
and knowledge to become independent, lifelong learners. I allow
students to discover their own learning by planning and conducting
their own investigations and providing them appropriate tools and
techniques to gather information. This year we'll be working on sharpening student's thinking by
reinforcing "Accountable Talk". We do this by using
language that is appropriate to the subject of science, math, reading or whatever subject areas we are covering. Things that you will see happening in our Room...
In math, we will strengthen our skills. Our focus is to not only be prepared for the MCA II tests but also have the daily skills needed to succeed. We will work on mastering our fraction, decimal, and percent skills. A website, recommended by Ms. Schilling, former 6th grade teacher is, http://www.thatquiz.org. It will provide varying lengths of quizzes. The quizzes range from identification to multi-step word problems. The site also provides the answers and explanations to how solve the problem correctly in the future.
We will study Ancient Greece and learn about how the geography of Greece has affected the people and how they lived then and how they live now.
Students will learn how Cultural borrowing has been going on for centuries. The Greeks were known for taking ideas from other cultures and infusing them into how they lived.
We will again attend STARBASE. It is a program provided by the Air National Guard. The students will investigate how rovers operate on Mars through hands-on experiments. They also will learn about careers in engineering, technology, space, and flight.
