| Ames Students Presented Magnificently at Saint Paul Public Schools' 2008 Student Showcase - A Demonstration of Teaching and Learning with Technology... Congratulations to the Department of Educational Technology ... ALWAYS on the Cutting Edge! |  |  | | Ames 3rd Grade EIR Students Explain How they Made their "Please Help Save the Ocean Mammals" Clay Animation Movie to St. Paul School District Superintendent, Dr. Meria Carstarphen | Hats off to the SPPS Department of Educational Technology for giving St. Paul Public Schools Students and Teachers the opportunity to engage in the 8th annual 2008 Student Showcase. The event took place Wednesday, May 28th from 4 - 6 pm at Arlington High School. Everyone who attended enjoyed this celebration of student work highlighting the many ways that Saint Paul Public School teachers and students are integrating technology into daily teaching and learning. Particular thanks are bestowed to Director Connie Feil, Ed.D, Assistant Director Sheldon Ramnarine, Ph. D., Manager of Technology Steve Buettner, and Martha Hill as well as the following  | | Ames students displayed work in Introductory Robotics a using lego kit | Sponsors who have contributed time, energy, donations and/or talent to the 2008 Student Showcase: Apple Inc., City County Credit Union, CMRDC, Dell, Epson USA, Ikon Office Solutions, Infinite Campus, Qwest Communications, Saint Paul Saints, Teacher Federal Credit Union, Tech 4 Learning, Tierney Brothers Inc., Ideal Screen Printing, Graphic Exhibits Inc., Staff and Volunteers including Educational Technology Staff, Arlington Custodial Staff and SPPS Departments: Furniture, Graphic Services, Transportation and Nutrition Services from all who attended! Ames Students participated in the Showcase by demonstrating the following projects: a Clay Animation  | | Ames 3rd grade clay animation movie producers at the 2008 Technology Student Showcase | Movie - "Help Save the Ocean Mammals", a Powerpoint presentation featuring a close-up look into Harlem Renaissance, an iMovie, demonstrating their theory of the extinction of dinosaurs, a first attempt by third grade students publishing "The Ames Charter" school newspaper and The Lego Washing Machine, a demonstration to portray an introduction to robotics using a lego kit. Wow!  | | On May 15th, Ames students Celebrated their hard work efforts by being treated to a MN Twins Games (meanwhile some real authentic learning went down is math, reading, science, social studies and health!) | May Has Been an extraordinary Learning Month Crammed with Project-Based Learning, Extended Learning, Activities, and Fun!  | | May 10: Thanks Don Garhofer for arranging us as a food drop-off location for our community food drive and these volunteers who worked it. | Class singing Tu Ti Ta, Battle of Puebla, Mexico performed by 5th and 6th Grade Spanish Class, Songs and Dance Picadillo by Third Grade Choir and Dinner from Boca Chica. We are SO grateful to Ms. Nicole Ostendorf for the awesome job of planning and orchestrating this event.

Citizenship
The question before educators responsible for preparing the new generation of global citizens is how to translate the principles of social justice into effective practice. In this school setting , we endeavor to inform learners of the impact and importance of social justice. |
World Languages

All students will have the opportunity to take Spanish every other week for half of the school year. Hmong will be taught in an introductory course after school. Hmong culture will be taught too. |
Schoolwide Thematic Emphasis
Our first schoolwide theme this year will be "New Beginnings". Integrated curricular themes will be utilized at Ames to unify instruction, provide opportunities for students to generalize, and increase interaction within and between classes. This year faculty has planned two academic units, and are looking forward to arranging presentations, speakers, and field trips around each specific theme. |

WE NEED VIOLINS for Violin Exploration and Instruction !!!
We have submitted applications to several Grant Institutions to be able
to purchase violins in various sizes so that students at Ames can
receive violin lessons, Pre K through 6th grade. Right now, we are
waiting to hear if we will receive any grant monies to begin purchasing
the violins. As we obtain the necessary money, we will begin
instructing students in first grade, and then so on up the grade levels
as we can. If you know of anybody willing to donate a violin they

Ames Students Now Recycling Uneaten Food at Lunch!!!
We began reducing the tons of garbage our school throws out every year, and feeding as much as possible of what's left to local pigs. By doing so, we can significantly reduce the costs we are required to pay for dumpster hauling.

We had an exciting summer learning intense reading, writing and mathematics while also getting in tending the Ames Neighborhood Garden which this year featured tomato plants and Sunflowers.
